Hi all

I have been "lucky" feet wise- after the first few years when the arches went- horrid pebbly feel, apart from very iffy ankles the feet bar the occasional hitler saluting toe have been ok-ish

My left foot is struggling though and I think the big toe is doing the cha cha slide and has completed the "slide to the left" manouvre and forgotten to "take it back y'all"

its got a bit of a lump happening on the side of my foot nearer to my ankle/ end of outer arch than the toe joint "officially" starts and is definitely wanting to hide under the other toes.

Whether to mention it- iM not sure and to who...?!

Jenni

PS also noted that the "knuckle" bits when the toes join in with the foot seem dented in on a few of them. What does this mean?

Hi Jenni

I was with my Consultant on tuesday and she asked me how my feet were. I said it was like walking on a bag of stones and she just nodded. I don't think there is anything they can do but you may prove me wrong. I would certainly let them know though because they may be starting to take feet into account now when assessing DAS scores. In 9+ years I have never been asked about my feet before, so why now?

Hi Jenni

Feet? Ruddy feet?!! Don't get me started!! I have 'dents' similar to the ones you describe and in my case they are caused by the dropping of the metatarsal heads under the foot (equivalent of the knuckles on the hands). I have already had surgery to both feet and had most of the 'heads' removed. Worked well for a few years and got rid of the 'pebbles'. That was until the few remaining heads became problematical. The surgeon that did the earlier ops is now running a hotel in France, nice if you can do it, and the current ortho doesn't believe that removing metatarsal heads is a good move as it destroys the skeletal substructure of the foot. I have to agree with him on that one! The answer to walking on pebbles seems to be more supportive insoles to remove the pressure. However, the toe issue would seem to need investigating before it disappears under foot completely! Sounds like it might need straightening. The rheumatologist should refer you to orthopaedics, at least that's how it works at our hospital!

Next stop for my feet is to have the dammed things removed and swivel wheels inserted ... imagine that .. what fun LOL

Hi Sheila

They don't take account of feet in the DAS 28 because it is very difficult to assess inflammation levels around the small joints. Also, most people with RA have some problems with their feet as it more generally (but not always) affects the smaller joints such as toes, feet, fingers, hands and wrists in the early stages. Janice is talking about DAS at our January meeting!

So sorry you are suffering Jenni, but your description of the Hitler salute made me laugh out loud! It's the best description yet for my wayward toes!

As for the pebbles, I had special insoles made so I could wear my UGG boots as they are the only things that don't hurt my toes but were too sloppy without support! Now I can walk and be warm at the same time. It doesn't take much to make us happy, does it. Good luck with the big toe and hope you are feeling a bit better in the knee department xx Ailsa

Hi Jenni, i agree with Lyn's comment feet ruddy feet. Could you see the rheummy podiatrist? They seem to have most of the answers to feet problems.

My feet are supposedly not too bad on x ray, but in reality are becoming deformed gradually due to ligament and tendon damage. Which apart from being given insoles not much seems to be able to be done.

Feet and shoes are a real bug bear with me.

I was out with my sister in law and she was talking about dresses and skirts and i had to say that i tend to wear trousers all the time as i have to dress to suit my shoes and feet. It does get on my nerves at times!! She was wearing a lovely pair of heeled shoe boots and i was in my widerfit velcro shoes!RollEyes
